Jemicy’s Upper School math curriculum employs hands-on opportunities for real-life
application and is designed to prepare students for a successful
transition to college level study.
The math curriculum focuses on developing strong computation and problem-solving skills, as well as analytic reasoning and fluency, while building confidence, communication, and test-taking and study strategies. The use of manipulatives facilitates instruction, and small class sizes enable students to receive more personalized attention and pacing. A course such as Jemicy’s integrated Geometry and Woodworking class provides a hands-on experience for learning geometry concepts, and the Kinetic Sculpture class, which is an art elective, enables students to apply complex math and physics concepts to real-world problems.

Jemicy understands that, developmentally, students acquire math skills at different rates and, therefore, offers two levels, accelerated and standard, of most math courses, to accommodate the abilities and interests of our students. Students have the ability to transition between levels as needed.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

Four (4) math credits are required for graduation and must include a minimum of Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2. Mathematics electives options include: Personal Finance, Probability and Statistics, The Math of Fantasy Sports, and College Algebra.
Standard Level
COURSES
Standard level courses present concepts in smaller chunks, which are reinforced with ample repetition and an emphasis on procedural processes. The pace of the standard level courses is more moderate than that of the accelerated classes, as students in the standard level classes may need to further develop number sense and computational skills.
Accelerated
COURSES
Accelerated courses move at a more rapid pace, and topics are covered in greater depth than in standard level courses. Students enrolled in accelerated courses typically have a well-developed number sense, strong computational skills, and an aptitude with mathematical applications and reasoning.
