Jemicy's Outdoor Education Program

This may look like one of Jemicy’s many field trips, but the ropes course is actually part of the Middle School Outdoor Education Program that is a beloved part of our curriculum right here on campus!

In the fall of 1997, Jemicy School became the recipient of a generous donation from Tom and Pam O’Neil that allowed for the design and construction of a ropes course, and it has been helping students develop critical life skills ever since!
Under the expert direction of Gage Monk, this exceptional hands-on experience teaches team building, problem solving, communication, appropriate risk taking, and conflict resolution. Additionally, completing the various elements on our ropes course requires attention to detail, concentration, and focus on the task at hand. This helps improve cognitive skills that carry over into academic settings. The benefits are endless–not to mention the students love it!

Gage adheres to a  “challenge by choice” philosophy, allowing each student to build self-confidence at their own pace as they overcome the physical and emotional challenges the course presents. They learn to trust that their teachers and peers are there to support them. Gage is a member of the Association for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT), a trained Vestals Gap Ventures supervisor, and a Wilson trained teacher who specializes in reading instruction for students with dyslexia.  Diagnosed with dyslexia at age 11, Gage understands what our unique learners are experiencing, and is dedicated to helping them thrive in and out of the classroom. Just one more way that Jemicy changes lives every day!
